Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Environment, announced the start of trial operations at the Sohag Public Slaughterhouse. This step follows the completion of the facility’s development, which was funded by the ministry’s budget. Furthermore, this opening is part of the national project to improve the efficiency of government slaughterhouses across all governorates.

Findings of the Technical Report and Field Follow-up
The announcement came during the minister’s review of a detailed report from the relevant technical committee. In this context, the committee, chaired by Dr. Zaghloul Khidr, reviewed the results of the field inspection of the upgraded slaughterhouses. Similarly, the tour included an inspection of the new facilities to ensure they are fully operational. Therefore, this follow-up aims to ensure the provision of the best services to citizens.
Details and area of the Sohag slaughterhouse (developer)
Dr. Manal Awad explained that the slaughterhouse covers an area of approximately 3,550 square meters. In addition, the facility features two halls equipped for livestock slaughter and related services. Furthermore, the site includes tanning rooms, refrigerators, and a fully integrated delivery area. As a result, the slaughter capacity of the new facilities is approximately 20 head per hour.
Upgrading infrastructure and technology systems
The minister confirmed that the slaughterhouse’s efficiency has been fully upgraded through the modernization of all its infrastructure. For example, advanced water supply networks and sewage systems have been installed. The upgrade also included the installation of fire suppression systems and entirely new electrical networks. In addition, the slaughterhouse was equipped with a camera surveillance system and modern ventilation and exhaust systems.
Objectives of the National Project to Improve Slaughterhouse Efficiency
The minister noted that the ministry continues to modernize infrastructure in collaboration with its partners. In this regard, the state is committed to enforcing strict health and environmental standards in slaughterhouses. Consequently, these improvements ensure that citizens have access to completely safe meat. Safeguarding public health and the environment remains a top priority for the Egyptian government.
Preparing for Eid al-Adha
Dr. Manal Awad emphasized the need to expedite the completion of all slaughterhouses currently under development. She therefore directed that they be put into operation before the arrival of Eid al-Adha. In conclusion, the minister affirmed that the primary goal is to maximize the benefit for the residents of the governorates. Consequently, this will help facilitate slaughtering operations in accordance with the highest health standards.
